A Soldiers Sunday

July 26, 2009

Hello, today’s entry is titled a Soldiers Sunday, I was going to use “Mourning a Marine” but felt that was not the right thing to do. As you read on you will see why I use this title. On Saturday I was out and about getting food a nd stuff for the house, as is my routine I stopped by the local ice house for the lottery ticket, as I enter the door I read a flyer asking folks in the community to come out and support the family of a fallen Marine. The Marine a Lance Corporal Brandon Lara was killed in combat in Iraq on July 19th near Baghdad. The flyer asked that people line the road along FM78 and FM3009 as the procession made it’s way to his hometown of New Braunfels Texas. I got up and went out to FM78 in Schertz to support a brother in arms and show the family that he is not forgotten. When I got to a spot I pulled off the road into a lot and waited, as time passed More people arrived, after 1030am the procession was seen coming up FM78 people moved up to the curb and into the middle of the road. Ahead of where I was standing at the intersection of 78 & 3009 a large group of folks gathered, from all over the community, local fire and police units took part. The local Sheriffs Posse set up at this intersection also. What makes this special is that the majority of the people lining up along this route don’t know this young American, but came out to show his family and all that he his a hero, he may not have all the medals of an Audie Murphy but he is a hero! He was killed in a place far away from Texas and the USA for a people he has never known and for a reason that might escape most of them, he was there to bring a little bit of freedom to the people of Iraq. We have such freedom here because of young men and women like Lance Cpl Lara and all the others who have given all for our country and for other countries around the world. He is my brother because we share the brotherhood of serving our country and being ready to go when called. I shall remember him and pray that his family will always remember what a bunch of everyday Americans show to him and them on a hot summers day in South Texas.

The support shown today by these wondeful people of Texas, USA warms my heart, for on this day people came out to bid farewell to our hero, to the public servant’s who took part my Thanks, UC Police & Fire, Marion Police & Fire, Schertz Police & Fire, Cibolo Police & Fire. To the motorcycle riders who backed up the procession a warm thanks! We all took part in something very special; today for the family of Lance Cpl Brandon Lara, a Texas hero, an Amercian hero, our hero! I share with you some photos that I took. May you enjoy them and remember this young man who was set to come home in October for his 21st birthday. I will share my birthday with him and toast him in October. Thanks my friends and family.  Love Ya, Pete
